Editorial design
THE PURPOSE OF DESIGN: MAKING THE COMPLEX EASY TO UNDERSTAND
Editorial design is the process of helping readers effortlessly absorb complicated ideas.
That demands understanding the ideas in the first place. Use a designer with strong editorial skills and the result is a always a better piece. Every project has three design goals: increasing comprehension to improve understanding, enhancing credibility for better retention of content, and creating joy because, well, people will like it.
Many clients see their finished manuscript as mission accomplished. We see it as the starting point to a structured narrative that engages the reader through design and graphics. We might suggest changes in wording or organization of the material that will clarify structure and elevate presentation. We complement the editorial with appropriate original art.
A thorough understanding of the print possibilities of a project and the necessity of reproducing the content on a variety of platforms informs our design. But we still believe in the power of a well-designed printed piece.
Books
This cookbook was designed and written for our 30th anniversary. Recipes demand precision and clarity and engaging cookbooks need a breezy writing style to encourage readers. Plus the food needs to be great. We think this book does all three. The book also is part of ahttps://aurascookbook.com that was overhauled and updated in December of 2020. Reports
This financial report for the Peace Corps needed to match their brand, but there was still room to augment the editorial to tell an engaging story. Complicated financial information, reports on project outcomes and a clear overview are all enhanced through creating a stonger visual parallel structure. We added narrative depth by including personal success stories. And this was all completed in one month. Click here for a PDF of the entire project.
Marketing
The power of a printed piece is showcased in this promotion for St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. Presented with a simple manuscript, AURAS enhanced the copy with a visual approach to storytelling by creating panoramic images. The piece has multiple folds and a pocket for inserted materials as well as a custom carrier that enhanced the promotion from first look. Posters
Posters used to be a valuable part of a marketing campaign. We still miss the experience of receiving a cardboard tube in the mail or a pull-out section in a promotion that you could put up on your bulletin board (remember them?) or—if you were really enchanted—maybe even framed. From the promotional to the artistic, these are a few of our favorites we’ve designed.
We all need something yummy. Here are a few items from AURAS that can satisfy a craving for design.
